Learning from Bayanihan/Dugnad, Oslo, Norway, 2022

Learning from Bayanihan/Dugnad is an Artistic Research conducted over the period of 2016-2022. Artistic research is the act of producing knowledge through artistic practice, rather than about.

The research is the artistic PhD of Furunes consisting of a series of collaborations Sudarshan V Khadka Jr. and five communities around the world exploring situated traditions of mutual support, such as dugnad in Norway, Mutirão in Brazil, đôi công in Vietnam and Bayanihan in the Philippines. These are wars of organizing, rooted in slidarity and care. They existed before most nation states, as well as the market economy offering a different set of values, understandings, and knowledge that can shape the way we work together. The result has led to five community-based projects and a series of exhibitions and contributions to the São Paulo Biennial (2017), Oslo Architecture Triennale (2019), and the Venice Architecture Biennale (2021). The critical reflection is documented in a book, designed by Kirstin Helgadóttir.
